1st Grade

Reading

Reading is an important part of First Grade! Throughout the day we read together as a class and in small groups. Please encourage your child to read whenever possible; your child seeing you reading is a great way to do this. While doing homework, have him/her read the directions aloud to you. Read with your child daily, letting him/her choose the book.

Math

Math is all around us in first grade! We are continually building on concepts introduced in Kindergarten, as well as introducing new ones.

A few of the concepts that will be covered:

  • Counting and ordinal numbers; addition and subtraction; data collection; calendars (days, weeks, and months); item classification and patterns; greater than, less than, and equal to; number sequencing (before, after, and between); place values; solving word problems; geometry & shapes; measurement of money, time, & temperature as well as length and volume; and fractions.

Math homework will coincide with concepts that have been covered in the classroom, and is assigned on a nightly basis.

Religion

Religion is an important part of our daily life in first grade. Students are encouraged to live like Jesus and incorporate His lessons into all parts of our day.

First graders will learn more about Mary and the Holy Trinity.

They will be introduced to the angels and saints, and write a report about a saint that is important to them.

First graders learn about the importance of prayer in our lives, and we pray at many times during the day. As well as the Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be, and Grace Before Meals, prayers that our first graders will learn are the Morning Offering, Prayer to Our Guardian Angel, and Grace After Meals.

We will continue to learn to pray the Rosary.

First grade will celebrate the Church year through studying the liturgical seasons of Advent, Christmas, Lent, and Easter.
