ASCD’s History

ASCD was founded in 1943 as the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development. ASCD’s mission is to provide resources, services, and support to educators who work to improve teaching and learning for all learners. ASCD offers a variety of resources, including publications, books, professional development, and a website with information and resources on a variety of topics.

ASCD’s founding in 1943

ASCD was founded in 1943 as the Associated Supervisors of Current Instructional Developments. Its first members were fifty-six supervisory personnel from thirty-eight states who gathered in Chicago for ASCD’s first annual conference. ASCD’s name changed over the years to reflect the organization’s evolving focus. In 1946, it became the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development; in 1966, ASCD joined with other professional organizations to form the National Staff Development Council; and finally, in 1973, it reverted to its original name, Associated Supervisors of Current Instructional Developments.
